Turning Trash Into Cash

In 2012, we started a special "upcycling" program at Wayne to help encourage our children to continue to do what's right for our planet. We chose to start with  those popular little drink pouches, such as Capri Sun or Honest Kids; the brand is unimportant.

Once the straws are removed, the empty pouches are tossed into the specially-marked Terracycle can outside the Multi-Purpose Room door. Throughout the year, the pouches are shipped to Terracycle and  upcycled. As a special bonus, Terracycle pays us for that trash!

The Student Council currently oversees this program.

The Butterfly Garden

Did you know that students have worked with members of the Wayne Countryside Garden Club to create a butterfly garden?

The Wayne Countryside Garden Club has generously purchased plants native to this area that will attract a variety of butterfly species. Sixth grade students worked with members of the Garden Club in the fall of 2013 to plant the garden.

We have received a $250.00 grant from the Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom program to purchase teacher resource books for planning educational experiences in the garden with their students.

Another grant was submitted in late November 2013 to the Illinois Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant Program. If awarded, we would be able to purchase benches for the garden. We hope to hear good news about this grant application in February 2014.

Sixth grade students worked with members of the Garden Club in the fall to plant the garden. Students of all grade levels participate in garden activities throughout the school year.
